The Benefits of Royal Jelly

In recent years, Royal Jelly has started to rise in popularity as a beloved ingredient within the skincare world. Though some cultures have been using it for its medicinal properties for centuries, it's a relatively new trend in the United States.

Royal Jelly has powerful skin healing effects that can be used to alleviate several different ailments from acne, to rashes, aging skin, and more when applied topically.

We love the properties of Royal Jelly so much that we have chosen to use it as a main ingredient in one of our favorite products - our Keepers Secret Salve. But, don't take our word for it! Here's everything you need to know about Royal Jelly and the benefits it has on our skin.

What is Royal Jelly?

Royal jelly is a bee byproduct that is used by the colonies to feed the baby bees and the queen bee. It's potent in enzymes, protein, fatty acids, and important vitamins like B, C, and E.

Throughout her life, the queen bee continues to consume royal jelly, and it is thought to be what's responsible for her development and fertility. A queen can live up to 5 years (compared to the average worker bee life span of 7 - 8 weeks) and lays over 2,000 eggs each day during peak season.

Researchers are starting to conclude that this mighty ingredient may have powerful benefits for humans as well since it contains bioactive compounds such as fatty acids, flavonoids, phenolic acid, and peptides that are valuable for skin and overall health.

Benefits of Royal Jelly for Skin

Rich in lipids, amino acids, proteins, vitamins, and minerals, royal jelly's makeup makes it a multipurpose ingredient in modern skincare. Since it is gentle and non-irritating to most skin types, it can be used in a regimen that includes other - potentially more aggressive - products like acid peels and retinol.

Some of the key benefits Royal Jelly has for the skin include the promotion of elasticity and hydration, collagen production, acceleration of wound healing, brightening of scars, and regulating oil production.

Here are some more reasons why you should consider adding Royal Jelly to your holistic skincare routine.

Heals breakouts and blemishes

Thanks to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, Royal Jelly can accelerate the healing of acne and other skin wounds while also reducing redness and inflammation. One study confirmed this by proving that Royal Jelly can increase the movement of fibroblasts (a cell that facilitates the process of wound healing) to a wound.

Fights against signs of aging

The abundant nutrients found in Royal Jelly soothe and nourish the skin, helping to reduce the visible skins of aging. 10-hydroxy-trans-2-decenoic acid (10HDA), an acid naturally found in Royal Jelly, can stimulate collagen production to treat and prevent wrinkles, finelines, and skin sagging.

The phenolic acid found in Royal Jelly may also counteract aging by providing effective antioxidant effects.

Protects and reverses damage from environmental stressors

The same acid that helps promote collagen production can suppress skin pigmentation, helping to fade melasma and dark spots from acne scarring and excessive sun exposure. When used regularly, Royal Jelly can also work to prevent hyperpigmentation and scarring from forming in the first place by increasing the cell turnover rate.

Deeply hydrates the skin

The high lipid makeup of Royal Jelly is ideal for keeping the skin plump and hydrated. 10HDA works to restore and protect the skin's barrier, reduce inflammation, and help the outer layer of the skin retain moisture. One study found that those who used Royal Jelly as a topical treatment for just 21 days reported up to 60% more hydration in their skin!
